St. Jerome penitent, 17th century
Oil on canvas. The work shows St. Jerome penitent, half kneeling, following one of the iconographic types of the conventional cultural tradition.
In his left hand he holds a small carving of Christ on the Cross, while in his right hand he holds a stone. Next to him appear his most distinctive attributes: the skull, the book and the lion, usual attributes of the saint and symbols of penitence and the transience of life.
