Large ‘Liu Jia Tian Di’ quartz and agate Dzi bead, Liao dynasty - An important amulet with an elongated spindle-shaped profile, crafted from a hybrid matrix of translucent quartz and jet-black agate, decorated with an iconic geometric-spiritual motif. The iconography depicts the ‘Liu Jia Tian Di’ (Six Circles of Heaven and Earth) composition, structured around a central hexagonal motif containing a large ‘eye’ surrounded by five other eyes arranged symmetrically in a grid. This composition alludes to the six sexagenary cycles of divine protection (Liu Jia) and the harmony between Heaven and Earth (Tian Di) (六甲天地). Liao Dynasty (916–1125) or later. Size: 70 x 19 mm
