Nun’s breast plate. Colonial School. 17th century. - “Our Lady surrounded by Saints” Oil on copper. This devotional art genre spread significantly in the 17th and 18th centuries in Spain and the Novo Hispanic world. Small squares were often painted or embroidered with religious scenes, which the nuns wore on their breasts as they took their vows. In the classic portraits of nuns wearing crowns, as well as flowers, veils and other ornaments, we can also appreciate the relevance of these shields. On occasions, even artists of the stature of José de Páez, Miguel Cabrera and Luís Juárez among others, painted these shields. Diameter: 17 cm.
