Carved, gilded and polychromed relief. Colonial School. Probably Peru. Early 17th century. - The scene narrates one of the Stations of the Cross on Jesus’ way to Mount Calvary. In the centre of the scene Saint Veronica is kneeling, wiping Jesus’ face, who imprints his face on the cloth in gratitude. This is a magnificent composition, in which the different thicknesses of the carving create a sensation of depth. In this way, the foreground portrays the scene of Jesus and Veronica, who are almost free-standing, as well as the soldiers on horseback who enter from the left. Those who are carrying the ladder etc. open the scene, and in the background are the rest of the characters in bass-relief. The magnificent colouring of the polychrome and the detail in the scene are outstanding. The relief displays great sculptural mastery. 39 x 96 cm.
