Juan Martínez Montañés (Alcalá la Real, Jaén, 1568 - Seville, 1649) - ”Infant Saint John the Baptist” Magnificent carved, gilded, and polychromed wooden sculpture with estofado technique. Circa 1640. 84 x 37 x 27 cm. With a report by Dr. José Carlos Pérez Morales. Saint John the Baptist is depicted as a child in his habitual pose: with his left hand raised to hold the cane, and the right with the finger pointing to the lamb which lies at his feet. As Dr. Pérez Morales indicates in his report, this Infant Saint John is comparable to the Christ Child, first documented in 1598, which accompanies the Saint Christopher at the Church of Our Saviour in Seville in its composition as well as in its technical solutions and volume. It also bears similarity to the Christ Child in the Two Trinity relief in the parish of San Ildefonso de Seville, dating from 1609.
