Leilão Bidspirit | ”Saint Michael Archangel”. Carved, gilded
”Saint Michael Archangel”. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Colonial School. Mexico or Peru. 18th century. - This sculpture depicts one of the three archangels, Saint Michael, vanquisher of the devil and leader of the Army of God. He is depicted as in the most typical iconography, with a breastplate and armed with a sword and shield. At his feet is the devil who he conquers, represented by a diabolical figure. The sculptural work and polychroming are magnificent. The posture of the saint, resting on only one leg which treads on the devil, gives elegance and movement to the sculpture. The movement of the clothing and the cloak that flies towards his back gives the group even more realism. Magnificent original polychroming and gilding. The sculpture rests on its original polychromed and gilded plinth. 66 x 32 x 24 cm.
