Two Unusual Pieces of Royal Danish Porcelain. Denmark, 19th Century.

Two Danish Jewish ceramic works in the form of decorative frames containing hand-painted scenes in roundels. One of the scenes, which shows a rural painting of a pasture with animals and a mansion in the background, is topped by the Hebrew biblical verse: "And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the Lord be his land" (Deuteronomy 33:13). The second piece shows scenes from the Book of Esther, with Queen Esther approaching Ahasuerus, and the hanging of the evil Haman in the background.

These pieces may well have been specially commissioned by a couple with the names Joseph and Esther, and thus shed light on how such works were designed and produced in a special way for Jewish clients.

The Royal Danish Porcelain Factory was founded in 1775 in Copenhagen, by Queen Juliana Maria and King Christian VII. Juliana Maria and the Danish royal family had their own valuable porcelain production, as did other European monarchies. Their symbol was the royal crown and the three waves. The three hand-drawn waves symbolize Denmark's waterways. In 1868, the first porcelain painter was employed; over time, the craft of painting porcelain by hand becoming women's work.

13 x 11.5 cm. Marked with the factory symbol of three blue waves.

An unusual and rare example of Danish Judaica from the 19th century.
