A Fundamental Sefer Yesod. First Edition of the Bet Yosef, Even HaEzer. Sabbioneta 1553. Fantastic Copy.

Tur ‘Even HaEzer’ by Rabbenu Yaakov ben Asher (The Rosh) along with Maran Bet Yosef – Rabbi Yosef Karo’s commentary. First edition printed by the R' Yosef Karo himself.

The Tur is a compilation of Halachic rulings that summarizes Halachot pertinent to the era following the Second Temple’s destruction. The author, Rabbi Yaakov son of The Rosh, is referred to as ‘Ba’al HaTurim’. He explained the reason behind his commentary:
“Since our days in exile have been lengthy, and our strengths have waned, and our hearts have stilled, and our hands have weakened…and disputes have increased, and opinions have differed, and there are no Halachic rulings that remain undisputed…”.

‘The Bet Yosef’ is Rabbi Yosef Karo’s prominent composition which clarifies Halachot based on the Talmud and the Rishonim. The Bet Yosef’s commentary was accepted as the authoritative Halachic ruling by the great Rabbis throughout the generations. In his commentary, the Bet Yosef amalgamated all the Halachic sources as well as the Halachic Authorities’ opinions, along with the disputes and reasoning of The Rishonim. The Shulchan Aruch’s final Halachic rulings are based on the Bet Yosef’s conclusions.

Rabbi Yosef Karo toiled for over twenty years to author his commentary. He spent an additional twelve years annotating and preparing it for print. It is commonly held that Rabbi Karo entitled his commentary based on a heavenly revelation.

This central text was written by Rabbenu Yaakov son of The Rosh – The Ba’al HaTurim - with R' Karo's commentary printed around it.

This is a superb copy, with light clean pages and wide margins. The title page and last page are slightly repaired. The entire book is in outstanding condition, with a semi-leather modern binding.
