Folk Art: Embroidered Tefillin Bag containing its original Tefillin. Eastern Europe, 1898.
A special and personal item hand-crafted for a Jewish young man in Eastern Europe at the end of the 19th century.
A hand-embroidered cloth bag with a drawstring, containing its original set of Tefillin in their old cardboard covers. The outside panels of the cotton-lined bag were lovingly cross-stitched on both sides, using the same background color for each. One side is embroidered in shades of yellow, green, brown and red, with a wreath of leaves and flowers surrounding the central letter "a". On the other side, the maker embroidered in red Hebrew letters: the name of the owner of the tefillin - Zvi Fecher, the Hebrew year the item was created - 1898, and probably also the [unidentified] name of the place. Four Stars of David and a large central 8-point star complete the design of this charming folk piece.
Tefillin bags were often given as gift to a Bar Mitzvah boy.
17.3 x 8 cm.
A personal and unique collector's item in the Folk-Art style
