A Fundamental Sefer Yesod: Kitzur Shulchan Aruch. Ungvár (Uzhhorod) 1864. First Edition.

“In order that all those who read it will be zealous, and know that which man is supposed to do, and he should live by them.”

First edition of the renowned Sefer Kitzur Halacha, which was unanimously accepted throughout the Jewish world. 14 editions were already printed during the author’s lifetime! Hundreds of additional editions were subsequently printed, including translations into other languages. An estimated two million copies have to date been printed; an unprecedented happening in Halachic literature.

Rabbi Shomo Ganzfried (1804-1886) was a Rabbi, Halachic authority and Av Bet Din in Ungvár.

He was born in the town of Ungvár, Hungary, to his father Rabbi Yosef, who similarly served as Dayan and Halachic authority in Ungvár. Rabbi Shlomo’s father passed away when he was only 8 years old, and he was raised by Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Heller (Rabbi Hirschli Charif), author of the famed ‘Tiv Gittin’.

Rabbi Shlomo gained wide acclaim mainly due to his work, the ‘Kitzur Shulchan Aruch’. It is comprised of practical Jewish laws, the majority of them derived from the Orach Chaim section of Shulchan Aruch. He omits laws that don’t pertain to most Jews, while including messages of moral instruction. Rabbi Shlomo served as Av Bet Din Ungvár from 1850 until his passing in 1886. He was a flagship leader in the Hungarian Orthodox Rabbinate.

Rabbi Shlomo’s first book, ‘Keset HaSofer, deals with the laws of a scribe penning Torah scrolls, Tefilln and Mezuzot. It was published in 1835 in Afen. This book merited the Chatam Sofer’s glowing approbation, who declared that he would only convey ‘Kabbalat Sofer’ (certification for a scribe) on his students once they were proficient in this book.

Rabbi Shlomo authored numerous other important works, although the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch remained his seminal piece and merited numerous reprintings.
