Chumash Shemot. Slavita, [1826-1836[, The Press of Rabbi Shmuel Avraham Shapira, the Grandson of Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz

Chumash Shemot with Rashi's commentary (without Siftei Chachamim!) and the Onkelos translation and with a commentary by Baal Haturim, a Vehagita edition.

Printed at the end is a second commentary on Megillat Ester with Patshegen Haktav.

On the title page, the title of the Chumash and place of printing appear in red lettering. Owner's notation in Sephardic script on the title page.

The year of printing is unclear since in each volume of Chameshet Chumshei Torah, different letters of the verse of "Vehagita" appear in bold. The format of printing, however, indicates that all volumes were printed together as part of the same edition.

The Slavita printery, its Segulah and virtue:

The printing house was founded in 1792 by the Rav of the town, the Admor Rabbi Moshe Shapira, the son of the famed Tzaddik Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz, and was managed by him and by his sons, Shmuel Abba and Pinchas. The Slavita books were famed in the Jewish world for their beauty and elegance yet even more so, for the owner of the printery - Rabbi Moshe of Slavita, who was revered by leading Chassidic rabbis. He himself cast the lead letters, with Kedusha, Tahara and exalted Kavanot, and even used to immerse them in a Mikveh before using them for the printing process.

Slavita [1826-1836]. The Press of Rabbi Shmuel Avraham Shapira, the son of the Rav of Slavita.

169; 24 leaves. 19.5 cm. Fair and less condition. Many moth perforations and damage. Bluish/greenish paper. Original, ancient leather binding, detached and with moth perforations and blemishes.
