The Rape of the Sabine Women, Gabriel Puig Roda (1865 - 1919)
Oil on canvas. Gabriel Puig Roda (Tírig, March 18, 1865 - Vinaroz, November 21, 1919) was a traditional painter from the Valencian Community, Spain. Son of humble peasants, in 1879 he entered the Royal Academy of San Carlos on the advice of his parents and teachers. Later, when he was already planning his return to town due to exhausting the few funds he had available, he attracted attention and obtained the patronage of Enrique Bosch, baron of the White House, who was his first commercial director and helped him obtain the favor. by Vicente Ruiz Vila, president of the Castellón Provincial Council. This institution allowed him to study at the Real Academia de San Fernando, in Madrid. Later, the Provincial Council granted him a grant to go to Rome, where he settled in 1889. Already in Rome he perfected painting with watercolor, what will later be appreciated in his work with the Italian influence. At the beginning of the 1890s, he gained a certain reputation in various artistic circles, so that it was easy for him to sell many of his works and develop his profession. After finishing his stay in the Italian capital, he toured the country, especially the cities with the greatest artistic tradition, which allowed him a great knowledge of Italian painting of all times. In his travels the portraits, landscapes and corners of the cities that make up his work are mixed. In 1893 he briefly returned to Spain, returning to Rome in 1894. His work, now stable and mature, stands out for the double influence of Mariano Fortuny's painting with certain oriental environments, and the traditional air, notably under the influence of the literature of The time. Returned to Spain and after passing through Barcelona, he settled permanently in Vinaroz. Measurements: 96 x 67 cm
