Pedro Avelar attended the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Lisbon and classes at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes, given by painter Roberto de Araújo and sculptor Jorge Vieira, with whom he has worked.
In 1963, he went to Paris where he had Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Manuel Cargaleiro and, above all, Arpad Szenes as Masters.
In 1971, he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie du Manoir in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.
In Portugal, it was Manuel de Brito, from Galeria 111, who acquired his works from 1965 onwards. With the April's 25 Revolution he returned to Portugal, where he held several exhibitions, individual and collective, at Galeria 111 and other institutions. His works are in various collections, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
