Beautiful 19 th Century copy from Raphael's Madonna della Sedia (1513/14) wich original is kept in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
The title Madonna delle Sedia refers to the seated position of Virgin Mary. In this painting she is depicted as a contemporary Italian woman with a gypsy scarf and green embroidered shawl hanging over her shoulders. The Virgin is embracing intimately the Christ child. Mother and son are looking directly to us, whilest accompagnied and adored by John the Baptist.
The tondo was a popular etude piece and has several high-quality copies, among them this 19th century painting.
