Opera composed by a student of philosophy Jakov Sokolov, Dec 10 day 1780. "Protege" — comic Opera Yaroslavl "student of philosophy" Jacob Sokolov. Written in 1780 on local material, which makes it unique for Yaroslavl. First staged in may 1814 during the celebration of peace with France by local seminarians in the open air in their recreation in the half-Grove when the audience. Repeatedly put in Yaroslavl during the first half of the XIX century, its lists were then quite ordinary. One of them was found after a long search by local historian VI. Lestvichnik and published in 1875 in the "Russian antiquities".

The Opera shows how the greedy and ignorant son of the rich priest Thomas competed for the place of the priest with the honest and clever son of the poor rural Sexton Provor. Life of the clergy openly shown satirically. According to V. I. Lestvica, the Opera is written in an easy, lively and fun; its language is simple and rough.
