Lavele E. Modern socialism .
Saint Petersburg: Printing house of M. Stasyulevich 1882, 385s. Hard cover. 16 x 23 cm.

Emile Louis Victor Lavelet (1822-1892) was a prominent Belgian scientist, economist, sociologist and publicist, and since 1864 Professor of political economy at the University of Liege. Major works of Lavela relate to the field of political economy, in which he was a prominent representative of the historical-realist school. Each phenomenon of the national economy he studied in connection with all the phenomena of time and place, with the mores, customs, level of knowledge, the physical strength of the population and its labor skills, religious beliefs, the nature and direction of foreign and domestic policy. Lavelet did not share the demands of socialism that the state should regulate social economy comprehensively, but he was even further removed from the views of the Manchester school. For him, the connection between political economy and morality is undeniable. In his historical and critical book ' Modern socialism` Lavelet holds the idea that the most essential ideas of socialism are inextricably linked with all the foundations of modern European civilization and, above all, with Christianity.
