Letter by Maran the Daas Sofer of Pressburg for Observers of the Shemitah, 1945

Letter for observers of the Shemitah in the Holy Land during World War II, by the great Gaon Rabbi Akiva Sofer-Schreiber, Gaon Av Beis Din of Pressburg. Jerusalem, 1945.

"...now when the year of the Shemitah has arrived, they have decided to observe the Mitzvah of the Shvi'it to the letter... who would have thought that in our days such youngsters shall be found..."

The days are those of the horrific world war; many Jews have been destroyed. Yet, in Eretz Yisroel survivors have been gathering. Most of the settlements in Eretz Yisroel-Palestine relied on Heiter Mechirah. Contemporary rabbis, however, tried to persuade and encourage them to observe the Shemitah and not rely on varied Heiterim.

This letter was sent to Agudah settlements, before the establishment of the State.

[1] typewritten letter with the Rav's handwritten signature on a letter of support from the Gabai. Torn filing perforations. Wear and folds. Good condition.
