Polemic! Luchat Edut, First Edition. Altona, 1755

Sefer ‘Luchat Edut’ – the polemic between Rabbi Yaakov Emden and Rabbi Yehonatan Eibshutz – composition defending Rabbi Yehonatan Eibshutz and his amulets, with his preface – Altona, 1755 – First edition – ancient signatures.

Signatures on title page: “Henich Halbstedter”; “Wolf Halberstadt”.

The book contains letters from rabbis, and religious and lay leaders, who stood in the defense of Rabbi Yehonatan Eibshutz, after he was accused by his opponent, Rabbi Yaakov Emden, of being a follower of Shabtai Tzvi, on account of the amulets he used to write (in which Rabbi Emden saw Sabbatean influence). The sefer is is headed by a preface written by Rabbi Yehonatan, in which he details the development of the polemic. At the end is a printed example of one of his amulets with his explanation.

It is in response to this publication that Rabbi Yaakov Emden printed his sefer ‘Vayakem Edut BeYaakov’.
