Important letter in Halachah by the Gaon Rabbi Meir Yonah Bransky to the philanthropist Rabbi Lipman Prints, in the letter the Rav writes about the holiness of Chanukah candles. End of the 19th century.
Rabbi Meir Yonah ben R' Shemuel [1819-1891] Rabbi of Svislach (Świsłocz, in the area between Bialistak and Grodno), for about one and a half years he was Rav in Brisk (Lithuania), known for his sharp and vast Torah knowledge and fear of Heaven. In his commentary 'Shaar HaChadash' on the sefer 'Haitur' (Vilna, 1874) and in his sefer 'Har HaMoriah' on Ramba"m (Warsaw 1888-1890). His family name was Bransky, and at the end of his days he changed his name to Glianovski.
The philanthropist and activist R' Eliezer Lipman Printz [1835-1915]. See about him in the sefarim 'Parnes L'Doro' (1992), "Neimos Ale"f' (1993) and 'Parnes L'Dorot' (1999).
About the connection of Rabbi Meir Yonah to R' Eliezer Lipman Prins the recipient of the present letter, writes the son of Rabbi Meir Yonah, Rabbi Mordechei Shatz in a letter to RE"l Prins:
"כפי הידוע לי את גודל ברית האהבה הכרותה בין כבודו ובין כבוד הרב הגאון האמתי, הצדיק יסוד עולם, המפורסם ברוב חיבוריו היקרים... הלא הוא אבי מורי ורבי מוהר"ר מאיר יונה זצ"ל. וכמה פעמים פקדו איש את שלום רעהו בברכות ידם, זה באור תורתו וזה מהונו, וגם רבות פעמים נלחמו בשערים מלחמות תורת ד' משיבת נפש, למזכרת האהבה כיאות לגדולי ערך' (Sefer Parnes L'Doro, page 83)
