Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Heller Rav and leader of Safed (1803-1884), was an offspring from the righteous Gaon Rabbi Yom Tov Lipman Heller. He was born in Zlotshov in Galicia. Before he immigrated to Israel, his grandfather Rabbi Avraham Peretz, was considered as one of the close associates of the Choze of Lublin and this grandson joined him when meeting with the Chozeh of Lublin, which left a deep imprint on this young child.
The family Heller joined the group of chassidim who's ideology was a great motive for aliyah to Israel. Three generations of the large family arrived to settle in Sefad and Tiberias, as it seems between the years of 1812 -1814. The family was from the elite scholars of Eastern Europe, and when they arrived to Isreal they joined the The socio-economic which was formulated by organised groups that arrived before them. The family merged very quickly with the Safed community and became part of their leadership.
Rabbi Shamuel Heller was a child when he arrived to Safed, he learned with much devotion, later he helped with the livelihood by being a Shochet, work which he had to give up after a severe accident to his hand. By the great earthquake that occurred in Safed in the year 1837, By that tragedy Rabbi Heller lost his wife and three children. After a short time he married again to Malka from the Barbash-Halperin family and with her he built up a new family.
After the passing of his Rabbi, Rabbi Avraham Dov of Ovruch, he became the greatest leader in Safed until his passing. From all over the world he was sent questions about settling in Israel. He had a very strong influence on the Chareidi settlement in Israel.
