Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis Fabric Fragment CAG EncapsulatedFabric swatch, taken from "The Spirit of St. Louis, " Lindy's custom-built, single-engine, single-seat, high-wing monoplane that was flown by Charles Lindbergh on the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight. Swatch measuring .625" x .75", encapsulated by CAG to a size of 2.375'' x 3.375''.Charles Lindbergh made the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in the Spirit of St. Louis from Long Island, New York, to Le Bourget, near Paris on May 20–21, 1927. His flight was sponsored by a group of businessmen in St. Louis, Missouri and named the "Spirit of St. Louis" in honor of his supporters from the St. Louis Raquette Club in his then hometown of St. Louis.From the archives of Lloyd M. Best, a famed aviation mechanic, metal-smith, and amateur aviator who at one point worked at the B. F. Mahoney Aircraft factory that built Ryan aircraft and the factory that had built Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis. During his career in southern California, Best would work for several aircraft manufacturing companies and served in the U.S. Civil Service with the U.S. Navy throughout World War II and beyond.
