Adolf Hitler Signed Letter to Italian General Giovanni Messe
HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. Rare T.L.S., A. Hitler, one page, folio, Berlin, 22nd July 1942, to General Giovanni Messe, in German. The typed letter bears at the heading the Fuhrer's name Adolf Hitler in golden embossed letters, underneath a golden German eagle perched upon a swastika. Hitler states I thank you and all the soldiers of the former Italian Expeditionary Corps for the greetings and for your loyalty. Further saying The knowledge that you and your brave corps stand at an important section of the Eastern front was and still is today a pleasure am proud of. You and your soldiers served your fatherland well. With your perseverance during the hard winter months and your still unbroken fighting spirit... and concludes with Today more divisions from your homeland will join you, which is a new evidence for me that our nations, whatever may come, will fight until common victory and gain their freedom.' A good war time letter. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope, typed addressed to the General Commander of the Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia, bearing to the verso a circular red label with the embossed German eagle perched upon a swastika and the text "Wehrmacht Adjutant to the Fuhrer", only very slightly affected by the opening of the letter. Also including an original clipped article from the Italian newspaper II Giornale D' Italia, dated 20th August 1942, published to the front page and reporting on the present letter. Giovanni Messe (1883-1968) Italian General and Field Marshal. Often considered the most valuable Italian General during WWII. The Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia, known as SIR was a mobile infantry and cavalry unit of the Italian army that took part in the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union. In July 1942 the SIR was replaced at the Eastern Russian front. Messe would leave Russia few months later in November.
