Moriah was an Orthodox journal that served as a mouthpiece for the moderate voices among the Chareidim in the Yishuv HaYashan. It was owned by the Yerushalmi printer Yehudah Aharon Weiss, who joined R' Moshe Shmuel Sheinbaum (1875-1948) as a partner. They submitted requests to the Turkish authorities for a permit for Dfus Moriah under Sheinbaum's name and for a permit to print newspapers under Weiss's name. The two were required to sign a commitment not to publish anti-Sultan or anti-government articles, and to be subordinate to the Ottoman courts. The name Moriah was given to the newspaper from the name of the press where it was printed, and also to emphasize its religious angle. It was first published on May 6th 1910. At first it appeared weekly, but it later became a daily newspaper with the addition of an extensive weekly supplement for readers abroad. It thus became one of the first ten daily newspapers published in Jerusalem. The newspaper was closed by the Ottoman authorities in 1915, at the height of WWI, after Yellin did not obey the order prohibiting discussing diplomatic matters.
