Torat HaBayit - Copy that Belonged to the Gadol HaDor Rabbi Leib Shaier, Av Beit Din of Düsseldorf. Dozens of Handwritten Glosses

"He had the burning face of a lion - the light of Israel, the right pillar, the strong hammer, the famous gaon, R' Aryeh Leib Shaier" (the Chid"a)

Sefer Torat HaBayit HaAroch L'HaRashb"a is among the fundamental sifrei halachah. The text of this sefer is in the center of its leaves, surrounded by the Bedek HaBayit critique by Rabbi Aharon HaLevi and the Rashb"a's Mishmeret HaBayit responses. Berlin, 1762. Personal copy of the gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Shaier, av beit din of Düsseldorf and the surrounding state. One of the leading sages of Ashkenaz, to whom the gaon Rabbi Nathan Adler (the Chatam Sofer's teacher) would send questions.

Two of Rabbi Leib Shaier's owner's signatures appear on the title page in his hand: "LaHashem HaAretz U'Melo'ah, HaK' Leib Shaier." Dozens of brilliant revisions and glosses in his hand are written along the length of the sefer. Sometimes the revisions are small, yet they totally upend the meaning of the text. For example, on hilchot treifot page 50a, the Rashb"a writes, 'on top of the knee ... it is permitted" Rabbi Leib changes just one word - instead of "on top" he writes "under" - completely changing the halachah.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Yehudah Leib Shaier.
