Suffering Atones: Mussar Letter from the Righteous Gaon Rabbi Avigdor Miller

Especially rare: lengthy letter [approximately 17 lines] handwritten and signed (in Hebrew!) by the renowned gaon Rabbi Avigdor Miller, one of the "supporting pillars" of Chareidi Jewry in the United States. His derashot and talks (recorded and printed) have enjoyed unprecedented distribution among Diaspora Jewry. Sent to the Chassid Rabbi Shmuel Dov ("R' Berel") Eisenblatt. Brooklyn, 1972. Letters from him are very rare. (To the best of our examination, only one letter of his has previously been offered at auction [written in English].)

The letter was sent to the gaon Rabbi Dov Berel Eisenblatt, author of Divrei Shalom and son-in-law of the renowned rabbi of Zurich, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Chaim Schmerler. The letter deals with topics related to suffering in this world, as the addressee was very involved in these matters, and even wrote a sefer on the topic (Chavivin Yissurim, Jerusalem 2000).

Rabbi Avigdor Miller writes to him in his inimitable style: "When (you) hear voices abusing [you], [you] can consider that this is very, very beneficial [for you]. The Chafetz Chaim wrote that of all the suffering, humiliation is the choicest, as nothing is lacking either physically or financially, yet this suffering still atones [for you]. Therefore, it is like someone throwing gems at [you], and although it hurts a little, do not say "stop." Rather, say "add more." This real consideration will make it easier for [you] to hear the sound of abuse, and possibly even rejoice in it, when it may be said about [you]: 'And those who love Him are as the sun rising in its full glory.' In admiration, Avigdor Miller."
