Sfat Emet published during the Holocaust in Shanghai, China. The book contains stamps of Rabbi Yehudah Gershoni, "the ilui of Horodno," also known as "R' Yidel Horodner."
Rabbi Yehudah Gershoni 1908-2000 was born in Horodno, studied under Rabbi Baruch Ber of Kaminetz and then at the yeshivah in Mir. He was recognized as a prodigy from his youth, and known as "the ilui of Horodno." He ascended to the Land of Israel in 1933 with Rabbi Kook's assistance, and went to study at Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav. There he became a disciple of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kook and studied by chavruta with Rabbi Sha'ar Yashuv HaKohen and Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Neriah. He received rabbinic ordaination in Jerusalem from Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, Rabbi Isser Zalman Metzer and Rabbi Herzog. He was a rosh yeshivah in Brooklyn in the 1950s, renowned for his Zionistic approach. He conducted Torah study in Hebrew at his yeshivah, and also held lessons in Tanach and Jewish thought. He authored many entries in the Encyclopediah Talmudit. He passed away in Jerusalem.
