Rabbi Ben Tziyon Yadler [1872-1962] "The Jerusalem Maggid" was rabbinically ordained by Rabbi Shmuel Salant, the rabbi of Jerusalem. From the time he was a young man, he occasionally sermonized in the Churvah synagogue. On Shabbat Zachor 1902 Rabbi Shmuel Salant honored him with speaking in an official capacity at the great Beit Yaakov synagogue in the churvah of Rabbi Yehudah Chassid, and subsequently appointed him "maggid meisharim" in Jerusalem. His character was commemorated in several literary works including by Shai Agnon. He would deliver a lengthy sermon on Tisha B'Av. Many were drawn to it, and it became one of the central events of religious Jerusalem. During Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance, he would go to Tel Aviv, Petach Tikvah and Haifa to deliver sermons to arouse the public. He would travel by donkey between the colonies, in the Shomron and in the Galilee, on a mission from Rabbi Kook to strengthen and encourage the people in the fields. He established the Beit Sefer HaChareidi L'Banot in 1918, the first in the Land of Israel, now known as "Beit Yaakov HaYashan" and then called "R' Ben Tziyon Yadler's Cheider." He participated in Agudat Yisrael's Knessiah Gedolah in Vienna in Elul 1923 and spoke before rabbinical leaders of the generation.
