Novellae and Halachic Rulings on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah by the Gaon Rabbi Yekutiel Kaufman Katz, Son-in-Law of the Magen Avraham, Author of 'Lechem HaPanim'
Identity of the author: On leaf 37, the author notes why he wrote in his book Chukei Da'at about lighting tobacco pipes from a candle made of animal fat, and this is indeed found in Chukei Da'at. And, in several places, he also mentions his rulings, and the work by "my teacher and father-in-law, the author of Magen Avraham."
This manuscript was not appropriately examined and researched; it appears that before us is part of his renowned work on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, Lechem HaPanim, in a more expanded form, and that before being printed (Wilhermsdorf, 1716), it was abridged and changes were made.
We may have before us the author's actual manuscript.
The gaon Rabbi Yekutiel Kaufman Katz, author of Lechem HaPanim, Chukei Da'at, Chukei Derech, Chukei Mishpat, and more, was born c. 1661. After his marriage to the daughter of the author of Magen Avraham, he taught Torah in Kalish aside his father-in-law, served in the rabbinate of Kutno, Gostinin, and Zhichlin, and as a dayan in the city of his rabbinate, Krotshin. His book Lechem HaPanim on Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah was very well received, and was printed in quite a few editions.
