A WOODEN LEGA MASK. D.R. CONGO. EARLY 20TH C.
A wooden Lega masks, named also Lukwakongo. The Lega mask has important symbolic and ritual significance. The masks were used for initiation into the first two levels of Bwami society and were covered with white clay Pemba each time they were used. Therefore, the mask is covered with a beautiful textured patina. The mask has a characteristic elongated shape, a flat nose and prominent eyes.
