Chen Tov, homiletics on the Torah, by R. Toviah HaLevi. Venice: Zuan (Giovanni) di Gara, [1605]. First edition.
R. Toviah HaLevi (d. ca. 1618), was a prominent Torah scholar and leader in Safed in the generation following the Beit Yosef and the Arizal. Close disciple of R. Shlomo Sagis, whom he quotes repeatedly in this work.
Calligraphic signature at the foot of the title page (partially deleted) of R. Avraham Carigal, Torah scholar of Jerusalem and Hebron, served as emissary in 1679-1681.
Signature on title page of R. Eliyahu Lehava, Torah scholar of Hebron, travelled as emissary in 1779 together with R. Yehuda Navon.
Ownership inscriptions on title page and p. 10a of Meir Shlomo Farhi (brother of Chaim Farhi, leader of the Acre community)
314 leaves. 30 cm. Fair condition. Stains, including dampstains. Wear and creases. Tears affecting text, including open tear to title page affecting border and slightly affecting text, repaired with paper. Worming affecting text, repaired with paper (sometimes over text). New binding.
