Traditional Covered Iraqi Kiddush Cup and Saucer. Iraq, ca. 1900.
A silver kiddush cup following Iraqi tradition:
It is a unique custom amongst Iraqi Jews to use a special cup for kiddush, fitted with a lid, into which the wife would pour the wine before her husband returned from synagogue. The cup was covered so that the wine would not remain exposed.
This silver set, elegantly designed and crafted, is characteristic of Iraqi kiddush cup sets in both its form and decoration. Engraved foliate elements embellish both the saucer and the cup, which is topped by a silver bud that serves as a handle.
This Iraqi custom well-represents the concept of Hiddur Mitzvah: "It is appropriate to adorn the items used for the mitzvot as much as possible, as it is said: "This is my God and I will glorify Him". Thus, one must also beautify the cup used for Kiddush.
12.5 cm (cup); 14.5 cm (saucer). 288 gr.
A lovely piece of Iraqi Judaica.
